In 1559, Maharana Udai Singh II went looking for a capital the Mughals couldn't easily take, and a hermit by a lake told him to build here. He did — and created something the desert had never seen: a city of white marble palaces wrapped around a chain of shimmering lakes, with the Aravalli hills standing guard. Four and a half centuries later, Udaipur is still the softest, most romantic corner of hard, sun-baked Rajasthan.

It's a long haul, so 3–4 days is ideal. Many drive overnight and wake to the lakes.
October to March is Udaipur at its best — warm, clear days for the palaces and cool evenings for the ghats. It's also peak wedding season, when the palaces light up and the city sparkles. The Mewar Festival (around Gangaur, March–April) fills the ghats with colour.
The monsoon (July–September) fills the lakes and turns the Aravallis green — a beautiful, lesser-known time to visit. Summers (May–June) are hot, so plan sightseeing for mornings and evenings and let the AC handle the afternoons. Sunset boat rides are magical year-round.

From Faridabad the cab heads via Gurugram onto NH-48 — the fast Jaipur highway — then rolls on through Ajmer, Bhilwara and Chittorgarh to Udaipur, about 660 km of mostly smooth, well-kept road with plenty of Rajasthan dhabas. It's a long but easy run, which is why the overnight-to-lakes plan works so well.
Making a loop of it? Chittorgarh sits right on the way, and Kumbhalgarh (with the world's second-longest wall) and Mount Abu make superb add-ons. Tell the driver and the route grows into a proper Mewar tour.
