Out where the Thar begins, a Rathore prince named Rao Bika planted a city in 1488 and dared the desert to move it. It never did. Unusually for Rajasthan, this great fort sits not on a hill but on the plain — and was never conquered. Built in 1589, its sandstone and marble palaces hide courtyards, lacquered halls and a whole aeroplane from World War I. One of the best-preserved forts in India.
Junagarh's ramparts glow deep red-gold in the desert light, ringed by a moat and studded with bastions. Walk the walls and you feel the swagger of the Rathore kings who built a city out here in the middle of the Thar.
Inside, every wall seems carved — delicate jharokhas, filigree screens and painted chambers like Anup Mahal and Phool Mahal. Bikaner's craftsmen turned hard red stone into lace, and it still stops visitors in their tracks.
Thirty km south lies the famous "rat temple" — home to thousands of holy kabas (rats) believed to be Karni Mata's descendants. Spotting the rare white rat is said to bring blessings. Strange, sacred and unforgettable.
The Karni Mata temple's marble facade and heavy silver-and-gold doors, gifted by the Maharaja, are a work of art in themselves. Even if the rats aren't your thing, the craftsmanship and devotion here are remarkable.
The red-sandstone Lalgarh Palace, built for Maharaja Ganga Singh, is all latticed balconies and peacock-filled gardens — part heritage hotel, part museum. At sunset the stone burns rose-gold, the classic Bikaner photograph.

It\'s a long haul, so 2–3 days is ideal. Many leave early and reach by afternoon.
October to March is Bikaner at its best — warm, clear days for the fort and cool desert nights. The Bikaner Camel Festival (around January) fills the city with decorated camels, folk music and dance, and is a wonderful time to visit — just book your cab and stay well ahead.
The summer (May–June) is fierce in the Thar, so plan the fort for early morning and evening and let the AC handle the afternoons. Whatever the season, an evening in the old city with a plate of hot Bikaneri bhujia and rasgullas is non-negotiable.
