Bikaner sits about 471 km west of Delhi on the edge of the Thar Desert — an easy 9.5-hour drive on the smooth NH-52 through Sikar and Nagaur. Founded in 1488 by Rao Bika, the city is famous for its honey-coloured sandstone fort and havelis, its centuries-old camel heritage, and of course Bikaneri bhujia, papad and rasgullas. A private cab is the most comfortable way to reach it: stop for tea and mirchi-bada on the way, travel on your own schedule, and skip the fixed timings of trains and buses.

A rare Rajasthan fort not built on a hill — begun in 1589, its richly painted palaces, courtyards, mirror-work and a museum are remarkably well preserved. Allow 2–3 hours.
The famous "Rat Temple" ~30 km south, home to thousands of holy kabas (rats). Spotting a rare white rat is considered lucky — one of India's most unusual pilgrimages.
A cluster of ornately carved red-sandstone mansions — the "pride of Bikaner" and a favourite for photographers, especially in the golden evening light.

Kolayat & Shiv Bari Temple — a desert oasis temple town and a peaceful 19th-century temple with a large tank.
For food, taste authentic Bikaneri bhujia and papad at their source, hot kachori and samosa, and the legendary rasgulla at Chhotu Motu Joshi. Try ghevar, raj kachori and a traditional Rajasthani thali — daal-baati-churma is a must.
October–March is ideal — pleasant days and cool desert nights. The Bikaner Camel Festival in January is the highlight, with decorated camels, races and folk performances. Summers (Apr–Jun) are very hot; monsoon (Jul–Sep) is mild but sights stay open.
