The legend says the goddess Sati's eye — naina — fell here, and a lake shaped like an eye appeared in the folds of the Kumaon hills. A British sugar trader stumbled on it in 1841, and within a few decades Nainital had become the hill retreat where the entire United Provinces government came to escape the plains' summer. March to June is classic Nainital — cool, bright days that empty the plains toward the lake. It's peak season, so book ahead and expect the Mall to be lively. September to November brings crisp air and the clearest Himalayan views from Snow View and Tiffin Top — arguably the loveliest window.
December to February can bring snow and a magical chill; carry proper layers and let us pick the safest driving times.
