Badrinath is about 525 km from Delhi and takes 13–14 hours of driving, usually split across two days. The route runs Delhi → Haridwar → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Rudraprayag → Karnaprayag → Chamoli → Joshimath → Badrinath. The temple is fully accessible by road.

Just 3 km beyond the temple, Mana village charms visitors with the Bhim Pul natural rock bridge, the Vyas and Ganesh caves, and the trailhead to Vasudhara Falls, a 400-foot cascade. Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his form as Badrinarayan and is counted among both the Char Dham of Uttarakhand and the four national Char Dhams established by Adi Shankaracharya. The one-metre black stone image of Vishnu in meditative posture is considered one of eight self-manifested (svayam vyakta) shrines of the deity. Legend says Vishnu meditated here for ages while goddess Lakshmi, in the form of a badri (jujube) tree, sheltered him from the harsh weather — giving the place its name. Pack warm layers even in summer, as temperatures at the shrines can drop sharply; a waterproof jacket, comfortable trekking shoes, a walking stick, a torch and a personal medical kit are all useful. Senior citizens should carry prescribed medicines and consult a doctor about the high altitude before travelling. Keep some cash handy, as network and card connectivity can be patchy in the higher reaches.
