There is no direct railway to Manali. The nearest convenient railheads are Chandigarh and Kalka, from where it is ~8 hours by road — which is why most travellers simply take a cab the whole way.

Manali travel tips
A permit (and open road) is needed for Rohtang — we arrange it; the pass is shut in winter.
Even summer evenings are cool; winters need serious warm clothing and snow boots.
It is a long hill journey — the overnight schedule and a rested driver make it comfortable.
July–August can bring landslides; keep buffer time and a flexible plan.
Rohtang is high — stay hydrated and don’t rush if you feel light-headed.
Card and network coverage thin out in the higher villages and snow points.
