The "blessed fort" at the heart of old Patiala — a 250-year-old royal complex of the Patiala kings, all painted halls, arcaded courtyards and a grand darbar. Recently restored, it's one of Punjab's finest surviving forts and the soul of the city.
Wander Qila Mubarak's inner quadrangle and you find frescoed chambers, a treasury and a Sikh weapons gallery. The Patiala royals lived and held court here for generations, and the faded grandeur still whispers of durbars and diamonds.
The "palace of mirrors", built by Maharaja Narinder Singh, glows beautifully after dark across its ornamental tank. Its frescoes and museum of medals and chandeliers make it one of Patiala's most romantic sights.

October to March is the pleasant season for the forts and gardens. Patiala comes alive around Basant (the kite-flying season) and Baisakhi, and the Patiala Heritage Festival (usually February) fills Qila Mubarak with Punjabi music, dance and craft — a wonderful time to visit.
Summers are warm on the plains, so plan Qila Mubarak and the Sheesh Mahal for the mornings and evenings and let the AC handle the afternoons. Whatever the season, an evening by the floodlit Sheesh Mahal and a tall glass of Patiala lassi is the perfect way to end the day.
