Can an EV handle a long outstation trip today?
On some routes, yes. By 2026 there are a few genuinely long-range electric cars that can cover popular expressway corridors without a mid-way charge. On flat, well-connected highways with fast chargers, an EV outstation trip is increasingly realistic. The catch is that it only works cleanly where the charging network has caught up — and that’s still route-by-route, not everywhere.
What about hill stations like Mussoorie, Shimla or Manali?
This is where we’d still pause. Hills demand two things EVs find hard: steep, sustained climbs (which drain the battery faster) and reliable charging at altitude (which is still scarce). Cold weather also cuts range. For a Char Dham yatra or a Manali climb in 2026, a proven diesel or petrol car is usually the calmer choice — you don’t want to be hunting for a working charger on a mountain road.

Range on paper and range up a mountain in winter are two different numbers. Until hill charging is dependable, we’d rather put you in a car that finishes the trip without drama.

Energy costs less than fuel, but for passengers the fare depends on route and car. The bigger issue on long trips is charging time and availability, not price.
Can I request an EV for an expressway outstation route?

Why not EV for the hills yet?
